Special Home Needed for Shadow

Shadow is a ten and a half year old German Shepherd mix who came into our care when her owner died. In spite of most likely being in extreme pain from severe dental disease, her friendly nature was obvious right from the start. Though some people might have seen just a sick old dog who should be put down, her spirit and enjoyment of life shined through, and we decided she needed a second chance.

With the loving care and expertise of the VCA Animal Hospital in Wakefield and generous financial help from Poundhounds, she has been nursed back to health and is ready for a new home.

We are looking for a very special adopter for Shadow. While her health issues have been brought under control, she is an older dog and will need some daily medications for the rest of her life. Nobody knows how much healthy, happy time she has left, therefore the person who adopts her will have to be brave enough to give their heart to a dog knowing that they’ll only have a few years together at best.

Shadow loves car rides, short walks, and just hanging out with her people. She gets along with other dogs and loves to play. She’s actually a little too playful with cats, though she has lived with a cat in the past. Therefore, we do think she would do best in a home without cats. We don’t know how she feels about children, so we’re looking for an adult home for her as well.

This message is cross-posted from my good friends at MUSH- Massachusetts Union for Siberian Huskies. Some of you may have met MUSH members at the dog festival. Their website is http://www.mushdogs.org/.

About Maverick
Maverick is a beautiful, 3-year-old, intact male with a tale to tell. Some time ago, he and his mate were brought to a boarding kennel to stay while his human family was in the process of moving. However, 6 months later, the family still hasn't reclaimed them, and attempts to contact the family have been unsuccessful. While at the boarding kennel, they lived mostly outside with very little exercise. Maverick became very stressed due to lack of exercise and social interaction. He was recently surrendered to the Animal Rescue League (ARL) in Brewster, MA.

Unfortunately, at some point during his outdoor time, Maverick also became infected with heartworms. This was discovered as part of ARL's routine intake screening. Maverick needs to start treatment soon. MUSH and ARL will pay for this treatment as well as his eventual neuter.

Maverick's Prognosis
The prognosis for Maverick's recovery is excellent, if treatment can begin shortly. Heartworm is, of course, very treatable, but the process is a lengthy one (months, not weeks). In order for Maverick to survive his treatment, he needs to be kept relatively quiet. After 6 months in a kennel, he is what we call "kennel crazy". He is circling in his kennel and anxious. ARL and MUSH volunteers have begun walking with Maverick every day, and his stress levels appear to be decreasing. For his treatment to be successful, he MUST be treated in a home setting with structure and love where there is a chance for keeping him quiet and resting.

We are optimistic that he will do very well in a home. We have let him run in the paddock at ARL. Once he works off some energy, he comes over and leans into you to be petted. While he appears to have had no formal training, including housebreaking, he learns fast. In 5 minutes, he was sitting for treats which he takes ever so gently. So manners are mostly a matter of training which can be carried out simultaneously with his heartworm treatment and mild exercise. He has been temperament tested and show no signs of aggression. Just love. His spirit is clearly not broken.

Help Us Help Maverick
There’s very little about Maverick that is not correctible. His only fault is that he hates cats, and it is apparent that he would best be placed in a home without cats or other small animals. At 3 years of age, he should have many long years of good health and happiness ahead of him. If you have room in your home and a place in your heart for Siberian Huskies, this guy is definitely worth the effort. He responds to treats, and he can be bribed, which should facilitate training. His coloring is spectacular, and he should get lots of attention no matter where you take him. Those who have had the experience of fostering a dog through heartworm treatment have been amply rewarded with a bonding experience they will always cherish.

• NO CATS or other small animals. Although he likes other dogs, he is very cat aggressive

• The patience and leadership to teach a very smart and loving boy to be a house dog.

• Willing to work on crate training so he can be crated during the height of his treatment.

• Willing to commit to foster for approximately 3 months which is the estimated length of treatment.

• Willing to go to either Wakefield, MA or Eastham, MA for vet visits.

• Preference to homes with only one or two other dogs in order to increase the probability of keeping him quiet during treatment.

Time to renew dog licenses!

Melrose Canine Control Officer, Diane Kurkjian, would like to inform all dog owners that it is time to renew your dog licenses. All dog licenses expired on December 31, 2011. Per City ordinance, the licensing period begins on January 1st and ends on December 31st of each year.

Your dog’s rabies tag is not a license; it is given to you by your veterinarian after your dog receives a rabies vaccination. Massachusetts state law requires you to keep both the rabies tag and the license attached to your dog’s collar or harness at all times.

If your dog is lost, both tags are a source of identification allowing you to be reunited quickly with your pet.

Dog owners may bring or mail a copy of your dog’s up-to-date rabies certificate and $20 to the City Clerk’s office, 562 Main St., to obtain a license. Office hours are Monday through Thursday 8:30-4 and Friday 8:30-12:30. After March 15, a $15 late fee will be added. Alternatively, you may use the renewal form attached to your yearly census form, which you should be receiving shortly in the mail.

Don't let a fun night turn into a scare. Show your pets how much they are appreciated by keeping them safe this Halloween.

Pet Safety Tips

Even if Fido does tricks - no treats! Chocolate, in all forms, is toxic to dogs as well as cats. Symptoms
of significant chocolate ingestion may include vomiting, diarrhea, hyperactivity, increased thirst,
urination and heart rate - and even siezures.

Keep an eye out for foil and cellophane wrappers. If these are ingested by your pet they can become a
choking hazard or cause an intestinal blockage.

Keep cords and wires from decorations out of reach from your pets. A wagging tail or a curious kitty
could knock a jack-o-lantern over causing fire and/or injury to your pet.

Costumes are cute but not meant for all pets. If your pet isn't in love with dressing up let them go "au
natural." With all the trick or treaters and festivities of the night there is no need to add undue
stress on your pet.

Keep nervous or anxious pets away from the front door during peak trick or treat hours. With all the
excitement, various costumes and strangers coming to the door it can be scary, confusing and stressful to your pet.

Be careful when opening the door to give out treats - you do not want your pet running off into the night.

Keep IDs on your pet, even if they are typically removed at night. If, for any reason, your pet escapes
and becomes lost, a collar and tags and/or a microchip can increase the chances that he or she will be
returned to you.

If you are hosting a party make sure all food and alcohol is located out of your pet's reach. Unless
your pet is super friendly it may be better to keep it in a separate room with appropriate treats and ample water.

Good news! Sadie has found a foster home!

Will you give me a second chance?

Sadie is a 9 year old, spayed female Miniature Pinscher looking for someone to give her a second chance at life. Sadie is a loving, loyal little girl who has been my constant companion for the last nine years. Sadly due to unforseen circumstances (losing my job and losing my housing), I am being forced to find her a new forever home. Sadie is a larger-type Min Pin, she weighs 20 lbs and stands 13 inches at the shoulder. She loves sleeping in bed, under the covers, or laying at your feet. She has lived with cats and did quite well, and is living with another dog at the moment. However, typical for her breed, she can be a bit bossy with other dogs and therefore would do best as the only dog in a home, or with another submissive dog. I feel that Sadie would do best in a home with older children or no children as she does not appreciate small inquisitive fingers poking and prodding her.

Sadie is in excellent physical health, and does not act her age! She is up to date on her distemper, bordatella (kennel cough) and rabies vaccines until fall 2012. She had a physical exam and wellness bloodwork (including negative heart-worm test) completed in June and all test results were normal. I have all her medical records, as well as, a 6 month supply of Science Diet dry dog food and 12 months supply of both Frontline topical flea & tick medication and Heartgard chewable heartworm preventative for her. She has completed beginner level agility and was awarded her Canine Good Citizen Title in 2004.

I never thought that I would be forced to give up my best friend, but life is not always kind, as I have sadly realized. I love Sadie with all my heart and want to find someone who will love and cherish her as much as I do. Can you give Sadie a second chance at life?

Pet Emergency Preparedness Tips

Preparing Your Pets for Emergencies Makes Sense. Get Ready Now.

1. Get a Kit of pet emergency supplies.
Just as you do with your family’s emergency supply kit, think first about the basics for survival, particularly food and water.
. Food: Keep at least three days of food in an airtight, waterproof container.
. Water: Store at least three days of water specifically for your pets, in addition to water you
need for yourself and your family.
. Medicines and medical records: Keep an extra supply of medicines your pet takes on a
regular basis in a waterproof container.
. First aid kit: Talk to your veterinarian about what is most appropriate for your pet’s
emergency medical needs. Most kits should include cotton bandage rolls, bandage tape
and scissors; antibiotic ointment; flea and tick prevention; latex gloves, isopropyl alcohol
and saline solution. Include a pet first aid reference book.
. Collar with ID tag, harness or leash: Your pet should wear a collar with its rabies tag
and identification at all times. Include a backup leash, collar and ID tag in your pet’s
emergency supply kit.
. Important documents: Place copies of your pet’s registration information, adoption
papers, vaccination documents and medical records in a clean plastic bag or waterproof
container and also add them to your kit.
. Crate or other pet carrier: If you need to evacuate in an emergency situation take your pets
and animals with you, provided that it is practical to do so.
. Sanitation: Include pet litter and litter box if appropriate, newspapers, paper towels, plastic
trash bags and household chlorine bleach to provide for your pet’s sanitation needs. You can
use bleach as a disinfectant (dilute nine parts water to one part bleach), or in an emergency
you can also use it to purify water. Use 8 drops of regular household liquid bleach per gallon
of water, stir well and let it stand for 30 minutes before use. Do not use scented or color safe
bleaches or those with added cleaners.
. A picture of you and your pet together: If you become separated from your pet during an
emergency, a picture of you and your pet together will help you document ownership and
allow others to assist you in identifying your pet. Include detailed information about species,
breed, age, sex, color and distinguishing characteristics.
. Familiar items: Put favorite toys, treats or bedding in your kit. Familiar items can help reduce
stress for your pet.

Consider two kits. In one, put everything your pets will need to stay where you are and make it on your own. The other should be a lightweight, smaller version you can take with you if you and your pets have to get away.

2. Make a Plan for what you will do in an emergency.
Plan in advance what you will do in an emergency. Be prepared to assess the situation. Use common sense and whatever you have on hand to take care of yourself and ensure your pet’s safety during an emergency.

Evacuate. Plan how you will assemble your pets and anticipate where you will go. If you must evacuate, take your pets with you, if practical. If you go to a public shelter, keep in mind your pets may not be allowed inside.

Secure appropriate lodging in advance depending on the number and type of animals in your care. Consider family or friends outside your immediate area who would be willing to take in you and your pets in an emergency.

Other options may include: a hotel or motel that takes pets or some sort of boarding facility, such as a kennel or veterinary hospital that is near an evacuation facility or your family’s meeting place. Find out before an emergency happens if any of these facilities in your area might be viable options for you and your pets.

Develop a buddy system. Plan with neighbors, friends or relatives to make sure that someone is available to care for or evacuate your pets if you are unable to do so. Talk with your pet care buddy about your evacuation plans and show them where you keep your pet’s emergency supply kit. Also designate specific locations, one in your immediate neighborhood and other farther away, where you will meet in an emergency.

Talk to your pet’s veterinarian about emergency planning. Discuss the types of things you should include in your pet’s emergency first aid kit. Get the names of vets or veterinary hospitals in other cities where you might need to seek temporary shelter. Also talk with your veterinarian about microchipping. If you and your pet are separated, this permanent implant for your pet and corresponding enrollment in a recovery database can help a veterinarian or shelter identify your animal. If your pet is microchipped, keeping your emergency contact information up to date and listed with a reliable recovery database is essential to you and your pet being reunited.

Gather contact information for emergency animal treatment. Make a list of contact information and addresses of area animal control agencies including the Humane Society or ASPCA and emergency veterinary hospitals. Keep one copy of these phone numbers with you, and one in your pet’s emergency supply kit.

Obtain “Pets Inside” stickers and place them on your doors or windows, including information on the number and types of pets in your home to alert firefighters and rescue workers. Consider putting a phone number on the sticker where you could be reached in an emergency. And, if time permits, remember to write the words “Evacuated with Pets” across the stickers, should you evacuate your home with your pets.

3. Be Prepared for what might happen.
Some of the things you can do to prepare for the unexpected, such as assembling an emergency supply kit for yourself, your family and your pets, is the same regardless of the type of emergency. However, it’s important to say informed about what might happen and know what types of emergencies are likely to affect your region. Be prepared to adapt this information to your personal circumstances and make every effort to follow instructions received from authorities on the scene. With these simple preparations, you can be ready for the unexpected.

Those who take the time to prepare themselves and their pets will likely encounter less difficulty, stress and worry. Take the time now to get yourself and your pet ready.

Why: A safe, off-leash area was initially conceived by city officials to alleviate issues on the city's fields. A city meeting was held in Feb 2009 to determine the level of interest and to involve citizens. The Melrose Dog Society (MDS) was formed to support the establishment of a dog park.

After 2+ years of work, the site being considered is at Mt. Hood behind the lower maintenance garage, west of First Pond and south of Stillman Rd.

In October, in three separate incidents, two domestic ducks and three domestic rabbits were found abandoned outdoors. The ducks were taken to MSPCA Methuen and the rabbits went to the House Rabbit Network (see links on the right).

It is important to understand that, even though domestic rabbits and ducks look very similar to their wild counterparts, they are not able to survive in the wild. They have been raised to depend on humans for their food and shelter, and they no longer have the same strong instincts and ability to evade predators. In the wild, they will live a short, terrified, uncomfortable life before succumbing to starvation, predators or exposure to the elements.

There are several shelters and rescue groups in the area which take these types of animals. Please check the links on the right for a few possibilities. Another important fact to know is that abandonment of a domestic animal is considered cruelty to animals under state law (MGL Ch. 272 s. 77). Potential punishment includes up to 5 years imprisonment in state prison, or up to a $2500 fine, or both.

While the best case scenario is for a pet to remain with its original family for its whole life, there are times when unforseen circumstances force the rehoming of a pet. In that case, planning ahead and exploring all options can often result in a great new life for the homeless pet. Abandoning a pet is never a acceptable option.

My name is Liz and I am a very sweet & affectionate older kitty who needs a loving home. My family couldn't keep me anymore and I am currently staying with the nice people at Middlesex Animal Hospital in Reading, awaiting my forever home. I am a total love bug and really enjoy attention, but am also pretty laidback. Unfortunately, I have a bit of a weight problem and am on a special diet food to get back in shape. I will need to stay on that diet until I do. Regardless of my "extra baggage", I am told I am a real beauty! I am 13 years old, spayed, current on shots and in good health. At the hospital, I've been exposed to dogs & cats and seem pretty relaxed around them so I may be OK with other animals if introduced properly. The Story of ‘Jade’

On the afternoon of Sunday, November 29, I got a call from the Police Department that a cat had been hit by a car on West Wyoming Avenue but was still alive. Since I was about 20 minutes away, I asked if there was anyone else who could get the cat to a vet sooner. One of the officers volunteered. This rather gruff and tough officer, who would probably be embarrassed if his name was mentioned here, is a true animal lover. He tucked the kitten under his arm and drove her to Massachusetts Veterinary Referral Hospital in Woburn.

While I searched for her owner, MVRH stabilized her and kept her comfortable. Her injuries were extensive: numerous fractures of her jaw and pelvis and a shattered rear leg. After two days, when nobody had stepped forward to claim her, we had no more time to wait. She needed surgery soon. I started phoning and emailing all the animal rescue groups I could, looking for donations for her care.

The response was amazing. MVRH donated hundreds of dollars worth of care in order to keep her bill as small as possible. Every single group I approached gave a donation. In the meantime, MVRH continued to give her the best care possible, just as though she was a loved pet owned by a paying client, and not a homeless stray. She turned out to be a lovely affectionate kitten, and soon won the hearts of MVRH staff.

For a day or two, it looked like her injuries might be too extensive for her to be saved, but little Jade has a strong will and she rallied. Unfortunately her left rear leg was so badly damaged that it had to be amputated. However, cats have amazing recuperative powers and as of this writing, Jade has already learned to get around very well on three legs.

I would like to thank the many groups and individuals who have helped Jade. A huge thank you goes to MVRH for their excellent care and compassion toward this little homeless creature. Many groups, and several anonymous individuals, donated funds: Melrose Humane Society, the Animal Relief Fund, MassPAWS, Merrimack River Feline Rescue Society, and MVMA Charities.

Soon Jade will be ready to have her own home and family. As Mahatma Gandhi said, “The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated.” All the caring and generosity shown by people for this little scrap of life proves to me that there is true greatness to be found everywhere we look.

As a final note, I will share the moment that finally brought tears to my eyes in the story of this little cat. I was on the phone with the MVRH hospital manager making arrangements for paying Jade’s bill, and as we were finishing our conversation she actually thanked me for giving the hospital a chance to help Jade!

It is especially important that I contact the owner of the small dog to find out his rabies vaccine status- owner does not have to take the dog back, no other questions asked.

Update and clarification on some green dog issues

Hello all, just some clarification on some of the questions surrounding this issue. Mainly I will repeat what I said at the public meeting on October 15th, with some additional info.

The purpose of the public meeting was to begin the conversation about off-leash hours at the parks. This will be a lengthy process, and starting the public conversation is just the beginning. At the meeting, I had said that the Parks Commission would likely be voting on this issue at the end of October or beginning of November.

At the meeting, and since then, the question came up as to whether the Parks Commission has the authority to allow a trial of off-leash hours. This question has been posed to the City Solicitor, who has responded after reviewing the ordinance. The ordinance as it is currently written does not allow the Parks Commission to allow off-leash use. Any changes to the ordinance would require a vote by the Aldermen. Then if the ordinance was changed, the Parks Commission could allow usage of particular parks.

This changes the timeline of this process, if it does indeed go forward. Whether the green dog option continues forward at this time is up to the citizen group which is working on the proposal, the Melrose Dog Society. The Health Department/Canine Control office's role in the process is to facilitate the process, by hosting meetings and this blog, and providing technical assistance.

There have been concerns voiced about how well the 10/15 meeting was publicized. The meeting was posted in both papers and on cable, and flyers were distributed in several locations. There had been plans to post more flyers around the neighborhoods, but unfortunately there was a miscommunication about who would handle this job, for which I take responsibility. This is one reason that I opened the blog up to this discussion, to provide an additional venue for discussion. Before any sort of vote is taken I will make sure that the info is publicized.

In terms of enforcement, I agree that more enforcement is needed. I have been trying to work different shifts in order to arrive at the parks during the early or late hours. However, I can only spread 30 hours so far, and I do have other duties which I need to handle. We are beginning to discuss this with the police department to get additional enforcement assistance.

Lastly, though the green dog proposal remains controversial, I did notice a lot of additional support for the concept of a dedicated, separate dog park. Anyone interested in working on this should contact Melrose Dog Society and offer to help.

I will try to post more next week, after the citizens who are working on this project have had a chance to decide what their next steps are. I'm sure many of you have participated in a public process like this before, and understand how much work is involved. Please continue to be respectful of each other as we go through this process. Last night's public meeting on the Green Dog off-leash hours proposal was very productive. 56 people attended, and many got up to speak for or against the proposal. I will post a summary of the notes taken as soon as it's available. I was extremely impressed with the respectful behavior of everyone who attended. Although people had very strong feelings on the subject, they were able to be courteous, and this really facilitated a great discussion.

All input will be forwarded to the Parks Commission to aid them in deciding whether to allow a trial of this proposal. We are still collecting public input from anyone who was not able to attend last night's meeting. Melrose Green Dog Proposal- public meeting October 15th

INTRODUCTION
Green Dog is a program which has been used in other cities like Melrose, where open space is limited. The Green Dog Program allows specific hours and locations for dog owners to allow their dogs off leash in designated city parks.

The Melrose Dog Society is a citizen group which was formed this year to work toward recreation options for dog owners. The MDS has been working closely with the Melrose Parks Department and Melrose Canine Control to develop a draft Green Dog Proposal.PUBLIC MEETING- PROPOSED OFF-LEASH HOURSWhen: Thursday, October 15, 2009 at 7:00- 9:00 p.m.

The purpose of this meeting will be to present a proposal to allow a trial of legal off-leash hours for dogs at the following parks: Melrose Common, Hesseltine Field and Franklin Field. Public comments will be collected to aid the Parks Commission in voting on this matter at a future date.

DRAFT GREEN DOG RULES AND REGULATIONS
The Green Dog Program of Melrose could be an innovative approach to meeting our dogs’ and dog owners’ desire to have time off-leash, while sharing the spaces seamlessly with other park users in our urban community. Pending approval, the City of Melrose would conduct a pilot program at three off-leash areas across the city, with specific off-leash hours established by the Melrose Parks Commission. Dog owners are allowed to play with and train their dogs off-leash during these designated times following the program criteria and rules. The pilot program will begin on DATE and will be reassessed by the Parks Commission on DATE. The Melrose Canine Officer will monitor compliance with the Green Dogs criteria and rules, and prepare an assessment at the end of the pilot program for the Melrose Parks Commission.

The City of Melrose and the Melrose Dog Society will help promote a successful dog program. Each Green Dog Park will have a liaison that will:
· Promote, enlist and encourage others to promote a successful program.
· Answer questions and attempt to resolve issues.
· Receive and forward comments, complaints, unresolved issues, suggestions and general information from dog walkers and abutters to the Melrose Canine Control Officer and Melrose Dog Society. See contacts below.
· Report abuses to the Melrose Canine Control Officer and Melrose Dog Society.

To help ensure that our residents, visitors and dogs enjoy a quality experience, participants must meet these criteria and follow these rules. Failure to comply may jeopardize the Green Dog Program.

I. Criteria:
1. Aggressive dogs are not permitted on or off-leash.
2. Dogs must be at least four months old to participate in the program.
3. Dogs in heat are not allowed off-leash.
4. Dogs must be healthy (no contagious conditions, diseases, or parasites).
5. Only dogs licensed in their home city and with an up-to-date rabies tag are permitted off leash.
6. Dogs must have the following info on their collar: dog license tag, rabies tag, home address and contact phone number.

II. Park Rules:
1. Dogs are only allowed off leash at participating parks at established hours.
2. Dogs must be on leash until they are inside the park. Keep your leash on hand at all times.
3. One dog walker may walk no more than two dogs and the dog walker must have a separate leash for each dog.
4. Aim to improve neighborhood relations and the overall condition at the parks. Sweep the parks during daylight hours to pick up litter and any missed dog waste from others.
5. Dog walkers must carry at least two waste pick-up bags per dog and must pick up and properly dispose of their dog(s) waste. Encourage others to do the same and pick up others when necessary.
6. Dog walkers must carry a flashlight during dusk or dark hours to aid finding dog waste. Car lights must switched off immediately after parking.
7. Dogs must be in sight at all times.
8. Dog walkers must fill in holes with the loam supplied at each park and report any poor or unsafe field conditions to the Melrose Park Department.
9. No barking dogs. Barking disturbs neighbors and will jeopardize the Green Dog program.
10. Dog walkers must have their dogs under control and under voice control at all times (dog responds to and obeys your verbal commands).
11. Dogs may not harass, bully, or show continued aggression towards other dogs, and must be immediately leashed and controlled from affecting others.
12. Dogs are not allowed to approach other visitors unless invited to do so. Be mindful of your dog so that other park visitors, children, and their dogs are not anxious about their safety. Many people (and sometimes other dogs) do not like unfamiliar dogs.
13. Dogs not able to obey Rules 10 - 12 must participate in a “Come When Called” training program to be allowed off leash. Contact the Melrose Canine Control Officer.
14. Check for park closed signs or crews working in the park, which means off-leash hours are suspended.

16. Report Green Dog Program violations to the Melrose Canine Control Officer. 17. Report aggressive dogs to the Melrose Police Department.

Meet Princess. She is an extremely sweet and playful 10 year old Mini Poodle. Princess' owner, an elderly Melrose woman, was no longer able to care for her due to her own health issues. She was turned over to us and we contacted Poodle Rescue of New England (PRNE). They immediately agreed to take her, sight unseen. They brought her to a vet, where unfortunately it was found that Princess has a heartworm infection. Many rescues would have given up on Princess at that point, because in addition to being hard on the dog, heartworm treatment is very expensive and time consuming. But, once PRNE commits to a dog, they follow through. Princess has started treatment and is doing well.

For anyone who is not familiar with how rescues work, they are truly amazing groups. Many of them specialize in a particular breed of dog or cat, or animals in a particular situation, for which the group members have a particular affinity. They are all volunteer. Rescue people give huge amounts of their own time and energy to help pets they don't even know, and they rely exclusively on donations.

I encourage anyone who would like to help Princess (and PRNE), to send a donation directly to PRNE.
